NS Atlanta North District: Atlanta, GA to Chattanooga, TN

In this section we will cover the NS Ga. Div. Atlanta north  district which runs from Atlanta, GA to Chattanooga, TN.  This line shares trackage with the Alabama Division to Austell. From there, it swings to the north and goes thru Hiram, Dallas, Rockmart, Rome, Dalton, Cohutta, and then swings to the north east going across the state line into Tennessee.  The line then runs a compass east – west. Passing thru Collegedale and finally into Chattanooga.

This line provides many great photo opportunities from the urban area of Atlanta to the vast openness of north Georgia.  The line crosses the CSX in middle of Dalton. The CSX line is the old Western and Atlantic, the line that the famous “General” steam locomotive ran during the Civil War. Most noted for the Great Locomotive Chase.

An interesting fact about this line is that it runs directly beside the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum at Jersey, M.P. 235.0. Where if it is timed right, you are able to get a photo of the newest G.E. or EMD power with a steam locomotive.

As time progresses, pictures and other information will be added to this section.

In 1990 my husband and I took a steam locomotive from Atlanta to Chattanooga. It was a beautiful old train with a dining car. I would like to take the trip again but cannot find any information and hope you can help me. Thank you.
