Southern Railway

At one time the Southern Railway was a major railroad in Atlanta and still is under today’s flag of Norfolk Southern. The Southern absorbed many railroads in the south but a railroad that they absorbed that was in and serving Atlanta was the Central of Georgia. The Southern had a number of passenger trains in and out of Atlanta then they took on more when they took control of the CG. The Southern discontinued most all of its passenger service in Atlanta in the late 60’s and very early 70’s with the exception of the Cresent. Which was a Washington D.C. to Atlanta to New Orleans train. That train went under Amtrak’s control in 1979 and still runs today in and out of Atlanta on a daily basis.
