In 1990 my husband and I took a steam locomotive from Atlanta to Chattanooga. It was a beautiful old train with a dining car. I would like to take the trip again but cannot find any information and hope you can help me. Thank you.

I am researching a book on large North American passenger stations. I have been unable to find a track plan for Terminal Station Atlanta. Does anyone know how many passenger tracks at platforms this station had? Also, does anyone have any photos or a floor plan of the interior? I am finding lots of exterior shots of the building but no interiors whatever, and the platform area remains a big mystery. I would appreciate any offer of help. Thank you.

Nikos & Raymond
I have enjoyed reading the Atlanta rails site. Great work. I am an Atlanta native, but have been gone from the area MANY years now. (reside in Richmond, VA.)
The A&WP RR is a favorite 'fallen flag' of mine, as my grandfather was a 40+ employee of that ole line. He retired as an agent at the old Ormewood depot on Memorial Drive, just east of historic Oakland Cemetery, way back in the mid 1960s. The old place fell into disrepair, but I believe that it came back to life as a restaurant a few years ago. Wonderful memories of visiting grandad there when I was a lad. The adjacent tracks that connected Hulsey Yard with the A&WP 'beltline' were pulled up long ago. (Grandad would halt traffic on Memorial Dr with a hand held stop sign when an A&WP freight had to cross there.)
The line was always known corporately as the A&WP RAIL ROAD...not 'railroad'. (Two words)
Ledgend has it that the first time that the Confederate 'stars & bars' battle flag was displayed publically was off of the rear platform of an A&WP train stopped at the Fairburn, GA depot about 20 miles south of Atlanta. (Indeed, I beieve there is a UDC historical marker about this incident in front of that handsome old depot today.)Fairburn is my fathers hometown and the residence of my late aforementioned grandfather.
My old friend, Bob Hanson, wrote a great book about the WEST POINT ROUTE a few years ago...a great addition to any rail library.
Keep up the great work...always enjoy reading about rail activities there in my old hometown.

I want to say thanks to you for putting together this website. I have been a railfan since I was a child living in Virginia, in which NS (Blue Ridge District) ran in front of my family's home near Farmville, VA. In 2002, that line was abandoned, and now runs on the beltline located at the southern part of the county. Anyways, I live in Chamblee, in particular across the street from the Chamblee MARTA station, so I get an excellent view of train traffic going northbound and southbound. The information on this site is solid and on point, especially the description of Armour Yard, where you describe the 35 ft N&W coal hopper. I think the hopper, camp car and several of the cars attached to it have been there for at least five (5) years. By the way, do you know of any websites on line that has live audio of the Piedmont district? I have a scanner I listen to, but I would like to hear communication further north than Doraville and clearer traffic south of Lenox. Keep up the great work and keep us updated.
